"Out of the night that covers me

Black as the pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul." 

Under the bludgeoning of fortunes

I have stood as the best,

And I have walked, and slipped,

and sometimes taken rest.

This I could achieve, never alone

But I had my Teacher with me,

Who told me where the North Star shone

And His teachings I carry in my heart within me.

मैं तो बद था ही, बद से बदनाम भी हुआ 

कुछ दाग़ ज़माने से मिले, कुछ मैंने खुद लगाए  

मेरा कारवाँ यूँ ही चल रहा था, 

गर तेरा दर बीच में न आया होता!

चल तो अब भी यूँ ही रहा हूँ _  

बद तो अब भी हूँ, दाग अब भी लग जाते हैं 

पर अब जब भी दर पहुँच जाता हूँ तुम्हारे, 

मेरी बदनामी गुम हो जाती है 

और दाग न जाने कहाँ खो जाते हैं! 

और वह समां जो तुम बांधते हो 

उसमें मेरा दिल भर आता है, 

वह प्याला जो तुम औरों को पिलाते हो 

वह मुझे बुलाता है और उसके लिए अनायास 

मेरा हाथ बढ़ता है!

Today is Mahashivratri

The world as it is 

Is not as it is,

It seems that which it is not.

What is not the world,

Yet is the world,

Lies hidden.

To see it you have to remove 

the world.

बड़ी आरज़ू ले के ढूंढ रहा था तेरा ठिकाना

खुदी में खुद को पाया तेरा आना और जाना\

मेरी उम्र भी न थी की तुझ को ढूंढ पाऊँ

रहमत है तेरी मुझपर फिर राह में मुझसे मिल जाना !   

With great desire (I) was looking for Your home

I found You in myself _ Your coming and going

I was not old enough to find You by myself

Your Grace it was on me that led my path to to meet Yours!

तुम मुझपे  हँसते हो !                                                       You laugh at me ! 

पर मैंने वह पाया है जो _                                                  But I have found that which_      

शायद कल्पना में भी नहीं !                                              May not be even in your imagination !

फिर मैं सोचता हूँ की मैं क्यों इतराता हूँ ?                          Then I think why do I so preen myself ? 

यह तो करम है उसका मुझपर _                                       This is His grace that He has showered_ 

मैंने तो उसके लिया कुछ भी नहीं किया.                            I didn't do anything to get it. 

न सुख मैं ठीख तरह धन्यवाद ही दिया                              Neither in the good times did I thank Him

न दुःख मैं ठीख तरह फ़रियाद ही की!                                Nor did I beseech in my bad times !

पर अफ़सोस! सच मैं मुझे ही मनाना  चाइये ,                    But alas! It should be I myself to be blamed

तुमसे इसका जिक्र भी करूँ                                               That I should be even telling you this

यह तो बदगुमानी ही  है मेरी                                             This is sheer stupidity on my part

यह तो द्रोह है मेरा उससे _                                                It is a betrayal on my part to Him _

दीन को छोड़कर मैं दुनियावोलों को मनाने चला!                Forsaking the Divine I am beseeching my                                                                                               fellowmen !
